The History of SurfingNo one can really prove when surfing first began but the first recorded sightings of the majestic sport came from a diary of a man on board the ship Discovery that sailed with Captain Cook on his third expedition to the Pacific.Captain Cook was killed in 1779 close to Hawaii and it was on this trip that a Lieutentant James King from the Discovery noted in his diary the men riding wooden planks in the ocean. An excerpt of the notes in the diary is below: "But a diversion the most common is upon the Water, where there is a very great Sea, and surf breaking on the Shore. The Men sometimes 20 or 30 go without the Swell of the Surf, & lay themselves flat upon an oval piece of plan about their Size and breadth, they keep their legs close on top of it, & their Arms are us'd to guide the plank, thye wait the time of the greatest Swell that sets on Shore, & altogether push forward with their Arms to keep on its top, it sends them in with a most astonishing Velocity, & the great art is to guide the plan so as always to keep it in a proper direction on the top of the Swell, & as it alters its direct. If the Swell drives him close to the rocks before he is overtaken by its break, he is much prais'd. On first seeing this very dangerous diversion I did not conceive it possible but that some of them must be dashed to mummy against the sharp rocks, but jus before they reach the shore, if they are very near, they quit their plank, & dive under till the Surf is broke, when the piece of plank is sent many yards by the force of the Surf from the beach. The greatest number are generally overtaken by the break of the swell, the force of which they avoid, diving and swimming under the water out of its impulse. By such like excercises, these men may be said to be almost amphibious. The Women could swim off to the Ship, & continue half a day in the Water, & afterwards return. The above diversion is only intended as an amusement, not a tryal of skill, & in a gentle swell that sets on must I conceive be very pleasant, at least they seem to feel a great pleasure in the motion which this Exercise gives." For this reason, it is said surfing began in Hawaii at Kealakekua Bay. By the time Captain Cook reached Hawaii in 1778, surfing was well entrenched into the culture of the Pacific island. Many legends and stories from years gone by related to incidents that happened in the surf. Surfing was a cultural event, a symbol of the Polynesian people. However, as Europeans settled in and around Hawaii the cultural significance of surfing and other cultural aspects of life diminished. Surfing became a recreational activity. Throughout the 1800s, surfing didn't completely disappear but the strict rule of European missionaries frowned upon the sport. There is evidence in journals of Europeans in the 1800s that indicated they tried surfing but failed miserably in mastering the skill. After 100 years of European ways, surfing was all but finished in Hawaii. Places which once saw hundred of surfers were deserted. It is ironic that four free spirited Europeans and a native Hawaiian were responsible for its resurrection. In the early 1900s, a man named Jack London moved to Hawaii and was fascinated with the sport. He even mastered it along with three other friends and a local who is regarded as the man responsible for the resurrection, George Freeth. London wrote about the sport in publications and interest world wide grew. In 1905, Freeth surfed in California and from here the sport took off. Surfing spread to just about anywhere in world where a good wave could be found. However, the three main areas where participation was huge were Hawaii, California and Australia. A movie titled Gidget made in the 1960s boosted the popularity of surfing and from this point on, it became one of the most exciting sports to be involved in. Not many Australian's would know this, but the first World Championships were held in Manly, NSW in 1964. During this meet, the inaugural meeting of the International Surfing Federation was held. The sport now boasts one of the biggest followings world wide with dozens of magazines, sponsors, videos, associations and competitions. © MAS 2007
The Aussie Dominance of SurfingAustralia has dominated many sports over the years. Sailing, cricket, rugby league, rugby union, swimming, netball and even horse racing. However, surfing is a sport where Australia has had incomparable success. For starters, the first world championships were held at Manly in 1964. An Australian, Bernard Farelly won that competition and from this point on, Aussie surfers feature prominently on the winner's board in both men and women competitions. Australia has produced more world champions than any other countries. Champions such as Mark Occhilupo (1999), Tom Carroll (1983), Mark Richards (1979-1982), Barton Lynch (1988), Damien Hardman (1987,1991) and Wayne 'Rabbit' Bartholomew (1978) are house hold names. Of course the women have not let Australia down, and our own Lane Beachley is one of the most successful female professional surfers in history. © MAS 2007
