The History of Sea Kayaking

The kayak traditionally meant a hunter boat. It is thought the kayak developed in North America but was also used throughout the Pacific and other indigenous cultures that lived near water.

Archaeologists have found kayaks that date back 4000 years.

Kayaks were made from driftwood or wood obtained from land. Designs of the kayak changed over time when the use for them changed. The kayaks used for hunting were slightly different from those used for transport.

Modern day kayaks are made from fiberglass and plastic. They can cater for up to three people. Purpose built kayaks have been used for adventurers to paddle across large distances of water.

In the 1980s, kayaks became cheaper due to plastic being used for their manufacture. This enabled more people to buy them and therefore the participation rate in sea kayaking grew.

The designs today change for the purpose, as they did many years ago. The modern day kayaks are usually between 12 and 24 feet in length. The cheaper purchase price has allowed for recreational kayaking on oceans, lakes and rivers around the world.

Kayaking is a great source of fitness and many athletes use kayaking as an alternate form of exercise.

The recreational kayaker uses the sport as a great form of relaxation. Access to the water for fun or exploration means kayaking is a great way to spend weekends or vacations on some of the most beautiful waterways in the world.   © MAS 2007
