Today it is rarely used, but this abseiling run will give you the chance to participate in this breathtaking experience safely and under the supervision of an expert. On the day of your rappelling experience, you?ll be met by your expert guides in the heart of Melbourne. The History of SailingSailing has been credited as one of the most important inventions to assist in the growth of the human race as we know it.One of the earliest records of sailing was the painting of a vessel displaying at sail printed on an ancient Egyptian vase. Historians believe the vase is from 3500BC. Since that time, the sail has enabled humans to commute over large masses of water without the use of massive manpower. Many of the historic ships used hundreds, even thousands of rowers and paddles to propel their vessel to distant lands to trade and conquer the indigenous cultures. The use of sails became frequent in the 13th Century when merchant ships traveled between Europe and Africa. With the improved design of ships and a better understanding of the power of the sail, explorers set off on adventures aiming to discover new land masses. The skill of these sailors was amazing. No GPS, no compass, no maps - just a sense of adventure and the stars above. In the second half of the 15th Century, a man by the name of Christopher Columbus set off on a journey that would not have been possible without a sail. He discovered the New World (two new continents) and from this achievement, many other explorers gained the confidence to explore further from traditional home bases. Captain James Cook famously discovered Australia in 1770 in his sail powered ship, the Endeavour. From this point on, sailing became common throughout the world. It continued until the industrial revolution when engines exploded on to the market and provided a new form of power for ships. Today, sailing still has a massive presence. Australia II Wins 1983 America's CupAustralian's are mad about sport and it comes as no surprise that our nation comes together to support our sporting stars.Events that inspired Australians to come together a cheer our sporting stars will go down in our folk law. People always talk about where they were when Cathy Freeman's won at the 2000 Olympics, Michael Bevan hitting a four against the West Indies of the last ball to win a one Day International, beating Uruguay to qualify for the recent soccer Word Cup, the announcement that Sydney had won the rights to host the 2000 Olympics and Pat Rafter in the final of the US Open. The list goes on. It is quite a surprise that a sport that isn't in the mainstream put Australia on the international sporting map. In 1983, Australia II won the America's Cup. Who would of thought a victory in a yacht race would be the catalyst for one the biggest parties in Australian history. No one had beaten the Americans. From 1852 until 1983, the silverware stayed in New York. That all changed when Australian Ben Lexcen designed the mysterious keel. Skipper of Australia II, John Bertrand, easily beat the American competition and this was a cause of huge delight. To attest to the hysteria the victory caused in Australia, Prime Minister a the time, Bob Hawke, infamously announced to the Nation whilst allegedly under the influence of a few beers that, "anyone who fired their employees for not turning up to work on time was a bum!" In a 2006 poll conducted by the ABC on the top sporting moments in Australia's history, the 1983 America's Cup victory was rated the best. © MAS 2007
