What are Quad Bikes?
Quad bikes are also know as four-wheel motorbikes and sometimes referred to All-Terrain-Vehicles (ATVs).
As quad suggests, these vehicles have four wheels and can go just about anywhere. They were used in the military and many farmers use them for transportation on their properties.
Quad bikes usually have gears but an automatic clutch makes mastering the driving very simple. Some are four-wheel drive and other two wheel with the ability to engage the other two wheels if the terrain requires more power.
Most of the main motorbike manufacturers have produced quad bikes. Yamaha and Honda are two of the biggest dealers in the world.
With the diversity of Australia's landscape, quad bikes are used frequently across the varied terrain. The bikes can handle dessert, bush, sand and low lying water such as creeks with ease.
The popularity of using quads as a form of transport for recreation and tourism has grown in the last ten years. Many tour operators have options for quad biking.

One of the Best Experiences of My Life
Dominic Feenan was touring the centre of Australia and decided to take a ride on a quad bike to get a closer look at the beauty the red centre has to offer. Here is an extract of his experience he sent Mad About Sports.
"Whilst holidaying in the Northern Territory, my tour group stopped at an outback station. The scenery in the middle of Australia is brilliant and I wanted to get amongst it more. Looking out the bus window at it was amazing but I needed to get out there and feel it myself.
At the cattle station I was staying at I was very happy to learn that they had an option to go for a three hour quad biking tour of some of the remote ridges and canyons.
The money was well spent. After strapping the helmet on and receiving the safety brief, I was off. This was one of the best experiences of my life, not to mention the fun of riding the bike.
To be amongst the natural beauty of the Northern Territory and having some boyish fun on the quad is something I'll never forget.
I'd recommend to anyone that taking a quad biking tour to see our beautiful country is a must." © MAS 2007
