History of Mountain Biking

Unlike many other sports, there was no one moment that defined the creation of mountain biking.

Whilst bicycles have been around for many years, purpose built bikes for rough terrain and therefore mountains have only been around for the last 50 years.

Since men first hopped on a bicycle he took it over rough terrain, but there are some markers that shaped what we now know as mountain biking.

In 1896, a group of black Americans in the military were picked to ride a particular bicycle on an 800 mile journey to test the durability and design of the bike. This journey took them through some heavy terrain and the bike was designed exactly for that, rough terrain.

In the 1950s, a group of men from the Velo Cross Club Parisien (VCCP) in France began a new sport but riding their bikes down the European ranges.

However, in 1953 an American by the name of John Finley Scott designed the first bicycle that resembles the modern mountain bike. His bicycle, the Woodsie Bike, had gears and brakes that revolutionised the sport.

A group of off-road cycling enthusiasts in the early 1970s also modified the bicycles of the time to include brakes and gears that were designed specifically to cater for downhill riding. The Cupertino Riders from California can be credited with being one of the first groups dedicated to mountain biking.

From this point in time, the world's cycling community where taking note of the modifications and mountain biking grew across the globe. America was the leader in the sport, but it wasn't long before European and Asian countries followed.

Today, mountain biking is a huge commercial sport. Associations, competitions and sponsors make the sport one of the most popular.

As bicycle and safety equipment design improvements were matched with people with a greater sense of adventure, mountain bikers have tackled some of the most dangerous ranges in the world.   © MAS 2007

From Commoners to Commonwealth Games

In the 1970s when mountain biking started to grow across the globe, no one would have thought the sport would ever be included in a Commonwealth Games.

In 2002, Mountain Biking made its debut at the Manchester Commonwealth Games.

In 1988, the International Mountain Bicycling Association was formed in America after groups of bikers were concerned that the closure of some trails would affect their growing sport.

The international association has members in all American states and in 40 other countries.

Mountain Bike Australia is the national sporting organisation responsible for the events and administration of mountain biking in Australia. Each state also has a body that represents the sport and many regional areas of Australia have their own body too.   © MAS 2007
