History of Jetboats

Jetboats became popular in the 1950s when New Zealander Sir William Hamilton mastered the use of propelling boats using water and not the conventional motor.

A small amount of water is forced through a jet pump by a larger amount of water and that force is what propels the boat. The boats can maneuver with incredible accuracy and the power can be unprecedented.

With New Zealand being the king of all extreme sports, it is no surprise that they developed the jet propelled boats into crafts that can carry a group of people and give them a thrill of a lifetime on the water.

"I was scared but loved every minute of it"

The following is an account of an ordinary man who decided to take the step and experience the exhilaration of a ride in a jetboat.

"I was holidaying in Sydney two years ago with some friends. One morning I was walking with my mates down near the Opera House. It was a beautiful day and was taking in the scenery.

We kept walking but something on the water caught my eye. It was a boat traveling at quite a speed and did this amazing flip turn. I had seen jetboats on television before and always wondered what it would be like to be onboard.

I watched where the boat pulled up and went to enquire how much it would be for a ride. After seeing the faces and laughter of those getting off the boat, I decided I had to be next.

Before too long, I had the life jacket on and was stepping on to jetboat. The engine kicked over and all of a sudden nerves overtook my body. "I held on for dear life as the boat roared around Sydney Harbour. The speed was just exhilarating and some of the turns this boat did were just unbelievable. I have never been so scared but feeling so much enjoyment at the same time.

It was thrill of a lifetime and I would recommend it to anyone. It was great fun and money very well spent."   © MAS 2007
