Harley Davidson Has A Rich HistoryTwo friends in Milwaukee, Bill Harley and Walter Arthur Davidson, capitalised on the invention of the gasoline engine and made a one-cylinder motorcycle in 1903.This first motorcycle proved to be very reliable and was eventually sold. From 1903 to 1908, the Harley Davidson company was formed. They worked in a small wooden barn and produced over 150 motorcycles. One of the most recognisable features of the Harley Davidson, the V-twin cylinder, was created in 1909 and the life of the world's most famous motorcycle was in full swing. In 1910, the bar and shield logo was placed on all of the motorcycles produced and the brand of Harley Davidson was also born. From 1910 to 1930, Harley Davidson produced several new designs that included the side car and three wheel servi-car. The motorcycles were used by the police and postal services and also by the military. In 1930, the eagle design was painted on all gas tanks of Harley Davidson's and the bikes were now legendary. The 1940s saw the commercial production of bikes stop as they were being produced for the war. After the war, Harley Davidson was producing motorcycles at an unprecedented rate. The Harley Davidson culture and cults gained momentum and in the 1980s bikie clubs and gangs sprung up across America. At the same time, Harley Davidson was exporting a wide range of models to all corners of the globe. Today, the thrill of riding a Harley Davidson is as strong as ever. Sales continue to rise across many countries and that distinct roar of the v-twin engines can be heard in suburbs all over the world. © MAS 2007
The Unique Harley Davidson SoundThere would hardly be a person anywhere in the world that would not recognise the distinct roar of a Harley Davidson. The unique sound is created because of the design of the motorcycles engine. Harley Davidson's have a V arrangement of the cylinders and also the crankshaft has only one pin. This means that instead of the pistons firing every full rotation or 360 degrees, the pistons fire every 315 degrees, followed by a 405 degree break, then fires again. What this means is that the compressed gas in the cylinders is released through the exhaust at different rates to other engines. Most engines release the gas on every revolution or 360 degrees creating an even sound from the exhaust. The Harley Davidson due to the different rates at which the gases are released through the exhaust has a distinct sound from most other engines. © MAS 2007
