Day CruiseFew people realise that there is a large oceanic park right at Sydney?s doorstep! The waters off the coast of Sydney are teeming with an abundance of seabirds and marine mammals, a variety that you will see nowhere else in the world. This wildlife cruise will take you to the continental shelf, some 25 nautical miles out to sea, where you will be able to see these wonderful animals in their own territory. You will learn more about the environmental factors that threaten their fragile existence and about what we can do to ensure their survival for years to come. The species you may encounter vary with the season but will include members of many different families. During June and July you will get the chance to see the humpback whales on their northern migration. In September and October they will be passing Sydney on their migration south and it is not uncommon to have them swimming within metres of the boat! You may see sperm whales, false killer whales, pilot whales, dolphins, sharks, sunfish and an abundance of seabirds. From August to December you may catch a glimpse of the endangered wandering albatross ? the largest of all seabirds with a wingspan of up to 3 metres! They can fly thousands of kilometres without pause and only need to touch land to nest and raise young. Unfortunately, this majestic species is threatened with extinction as a result of long-line fishing killing 100,000 albatrosses every year. On this cruise you will get to see these beautiful animals and learn more about their lives and what we can do to help ensure their survival. As the day goes on our knowledgeable guides will help you identify all of the species that you encounter during the cruise. A hydrophone is available for you to use to tune into whale songs. We are very lucky to have such a rich variety of marine life just off the coast of Sydney. Make the most of what you have around you and be one of the fortunate people to encounter such marvelous species in the wild. | Showing Items 1 to 10 of 139 | |
The History of Fishing
From the time fish inhabited our waterways there have been humans trying to catch them. Whether fishing took place in creeks, lagoons, lakes, oceans or fresh water streams, there has been a thrill for the fisherman. The hunting instincts of pre-historic men must be written into modern man's DNA as the excitement of catching fish is prevalent as ever.
One of the earliest recorded references of fishing is a painting by the Egyptians that is believed to be from 2000 BC. The painting depicts a man using a staff or stick to catch fish. Early fishing tackle is believed to be made from animal bones and vines. There are references to fishing in the writing of Greek philosophers in the second and third centuries. There are also stories of Macedonians using artificial flies for fishing around the same period.
As with most activities, the equipment developed over the years. In ancient times spears were the standard tools before lines and hooks were used. Modern fishing exploded after an angler in England wrote a book in 1653 The Compleat Angler, or the Contemplative Man's Recreation.
Since that time, fishing has become a favourite pastime of people all over the world. With the vast waterways available to anglers in Australia, it is no surprise that in a recent Australian Bureau of Statistics report it states that over 6% Australians participate in fishing regularly. This is equates to over a million Aussies. © MAS 2007
The Sports Fishing Industry
Sports fishing is a big industry in Australia. Anglers from all over the country and world come to experience the exquisite waterways and thrill of the big catch.
There are numerous competitions held each year where anglers give up their own time to participate in the hope of landing the big one. The competitions are well supported by commercial sponsors which demonstrates their importance to the Aussie lifestyle.
Across Australia you can find fishing charters that will take you and your friends into the some of the most beautiful waterways in the world. Whether you want to catch barramundi in the Northern Territory or marlin of the east coast, Mad About Sports can get you there. © MAS 2007
