What is Canyoning?
Canyoning is an extreme sport that can be found in all parts of the world. It is the sport of exploring canyons. Usually canyoning refers to exploring the depths or descending into canyons. Canyoning is also known as canyoneering in the United States, kloofing in Africa and river tracing in Japan.
Most canyoneering involves descending into a canyon following the water course. The use of ropes, harnesses, helmets and other specialised safety equipment is essential for this extreme sport. The majority of canyons have been naturally cut into limestone, sandstone, granite and basalt rock formations.
People of all ages and skill levels can enjoy canyoning. The emphasis is on the beauty of the canyons and not necessarily the degree of difficulty. Canyoning or canyoneering is quite popular in Australia, New Zealand, USA, Japan, Portugal, Mexico, South Africa, Brazil, Ecuador, Turkey and Israel. Australia has some of the most beautiful canyons in the world and the sport of exploring them is gaining popularity. © MAS 2007
