The History of Bungy Jumping
Pentecost Island in the Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu is where bungee jumping originated.
Men in the local Melanesian tribe jumped off 25 metre high bamboo towers with vines tied to their feet. This jump is performed as a manhood ritual.
The ritual transpired from a village in Vanuatu. A man had an argument with his wife who then ran away and climbed a Banyan tree. The man chased the women up the tree. The woman tied her ankles with vines and leapt from the tree. The man followed not knowing what his wife had done. The man obviously died but the woman survived.
Men in the village were impressed by the quick thinking woman that they began to practice the jump with vines attached to their ankles in case they found themselves in a similar situation.
The modern rubber rope bungee jumps originated in New Zealand in the late 1980s. The world became aware of bungee jumping as a sport when a New Zealander named AJ Hackett jumped from the Eiffel Tower. This jump was broadcast on television throughout Europe.
In 1979, on April Fools Day (1 April), four men from Oxford University's Dangerous Sports Club jumped from a suspension bridge in Bristol, England. This act had the men arrested but their bungee jump gained extensive media coverage. The Dangerous Sports Club also jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge in the United States.
The first commercial bungee jumping site opened in New Zealand by AJ Hackett. He worked with Auckland University to develop the modern day bungee cord.
Today, bungee jumping is the easiest and most popular extreme aerial sport. Thousands of people world wide have complete a bungee jump. © MAS 2007
What Are Bungy Cords Made Of?
Before you plunge off a bridge and into a canyon wouldn't you like to know what the cord attached to your feet is made of?
There are two main types of bungee cords.
The cords used in the beginning of bungee jumps are called sheathed cords. They were designed by the military and used by the founders of the modern bungee, the Oxford Dangerous Sports Club. The cords have a rubber core and covered by cotton or nylon sheath. These are similar to the bungee straps or octopus/occy straps used today to hold down objects on cars or trailers.
The all-rubber cords were designed specifically for bungee use. Over 1000 individual strands are bound together to make the all-rubber cords. The cords at full stretch can be four times as long as the resting length. The all-rubber cords have less resistance and therefore more rebound energy.
It is for the rebound energy that all-rubber cords are the preferred by bungee operators. © MAS 2007
