Story Bridge Adventure Climb Midweek Daytime Climb BrisbaneThe Story Bridge climb is an adventure experience with a difference and the most spectacular way to discover Brisbane. Whether you are a local or a visitor, you'll be exhilarated by a once-in-a-lifetime experience that offers you the most breath-taking panorama of Brisbane and its surrounding natural beauty. The 2½ hour climb to the top of Brisbane's iconic Story Bridge is open to the public for the first time in 65 years. The climb is almost a kilometre up over the bridge's superstructure with the high point at almost 80m above the Brisbane River. From the summit of the bridge you can enjoy uninterrupted 360° views of Brisbane, its river and surrounding mountains. The picturesque Glasshouse Mountains are visible to the north with the world-heritage-listed Lamington National Park to the south. To the east enjoy views across Moreton Bay to some of the world's largest sand islands, and to the west find Mt Coot-tha and the lush Brisbane Forest Park. Looking down you'll see the Brisbane River, one of Australia's deepest rivers, snaking its way to the Pacific Ocean. From base headquarters at Kangaroo Point you make your way to the halfway house. Here the commentary begins, and continues throughout the climb. The climb ascends through the road level on to the anchor arm on the eastern side of the bridge. Here the incline is at its greatest as you make your way to one, of the two high points of the climb. From the eastern summit top platform the route gradually descends along the eastern cantilever arm towards the central platform. You then traverse the width of the bridge, above the six lanes of traffic. Once on the western cantilever arm, climbers begin the gradual ascent to the western summit top platform. The route then follows down the western anchor arm of the bridge back through the road deck to the halfway house where the incline is once more at its steepest. You will leave the halfway house and make your way south along the approach span walkway to base Story Bridge Adventure Climb Midweek Night Climb BrisbaneThe Story Bridge Midweek Night climb is an adventure experience with a difference and the most spectacular way to discover Brisbane. The climb takes approximately two-and-a-half hours to complete, which includes a safety briefing, climb simulator, suiting up and of course, the climb itself. | Showing Items 1 to 6 of 6 | |
Brisbane's Story Bridge
When entering Brisbane's Fortitude Valley, there is a landmark that cannot be missed.
The Story Bridge stretches across the Brisbane River and is a tremendous sight. Construction on the bridge began on 24 May 1935 with the then Premier of Queensland, William Smith, turning the first sod.
After five years of construction, the then Governor of Queensland, Sir Leslie Orme Wilson officially opened the Story Bridge on 6 July 1940.
The Story Bridge now carries six lanes of traffic, three in each direction. In 2005, the Story Bridge Climb began and is now one of the major tourist attractions in Brisbane. © MAS 2007
Bridge Climb - The Next Big Thing
The Australian obsession with big icons can not be under estimated. We have everything from the Big Apple, the Big Cassowary, the Big Pineapple, the Big Banana, the Big Barramundi, the Big Bull, the Big Captain Cook, the Big Murray Cod, the Big Cow, the Big Guitar, the Big Oyster, the Big Koala, the Big Lobster, the Big Marlin, the Big Ned Kelly, the Big Macadamia Nut, the Big Orange, the Big Peanut, the Big Ram, the Big Sundial, the Big Winch, the Big Woolbales, the Big Worm, the Big Lawnmower, the Big Merino, the Big Gumboot and the Big Wine Cask.
It isn't surprising that our landmarks also become popular tourist destinations. With Australia's strong sense of adventure, the next step was to make the experience of visiting these landmarks more exciting.
Bridge climbs on the Sydney Harbour Bridge began in 1998 and on the Story Bridge in Brisbane in 2005. These climbs are two of the most exhilarating adventures available in Australia. © MAS 2007
